I already had the passion for doing the very best I could with my birds as the eight-year-old child who sold her baby birds in the cloakroom in the one-room schoolhouse.
Since late 1989 I have been a practicing Avianitarian of the Enhancement of my Aviary. I had African Grays, Moluccans, Umbrellas, Bare-Eye and RoseBreast Cockatoos. By 1992 I had included Military Macaws, Red Fronted Macaws, Scarlets, Blue and gold, Greenwing Macaws, Hyacinthine Macaws as well, the Vosmaeri Eclectus and shortly following Queens of Bavaria, Hahn's Macaws and Poiceschollis fuscicollis fuscicollis, Jardines. Later Blue Throated Macaws, Buffon and Illigers Macaws came to be part of our program.
My goal has always been to have healthy and happy chicks and pet bird by using the best veterinarians and studying educational material in books, videos, and proceedings.
With limited Aviculture education made me fall back on my Cosmetology skills with the study of organisms, sanitation, and sterilization. Bacteriology was primarily of interest to me about the similarity of my research in microbiology regarding cosmetics in 1967.
The relationships I've maintained with my veterinarians have a profound effect on my bird's health and my education.
I've combined information and references for the beginner, exclusively for the breeders of exotic birds. I can report what I have used through my years as a successful Aviculturist about a disease-free aviary and my success with breeding my birds. I applied the techniques of sterilization and bacteriology through the years in my bird breeding establishment.
Study of diseases, bacteriology, sterilization as well chemistry as a Cosmetologist over forty-five years and owner of several cosmetology businesses since 1964 has served me well in the management and care of my birds. I finished this some time ago, and with age creeping up on me and the successful hatching of many Blue-headed Macaws I felt the need to get this out to the bird community.
I hope you will continue to expand your studies with Avicultural microbiology with the increasing specter of governmental regulation of Aviculture. The information provided in this book is intended as a first step toward raising awareness of sanitary issues and establishing standards of aviary management. Each chapter is designed to augment basic knowledge and provide a foundation upon which new knowledge can be acquired. It is no longer enough to merely own birds to breed them. Progressive thinking recognizes that because of habitat destruction, increased human encroachment, and increasing pollution, Aviculture may represent the last refuge of many increasingly endangered avian species. It is, therefore, incumbent that every Avianitarian and Aviculturist should seek to maintain the birds they are privileged to own under conditions that optimize reproduction and minimize disease. There should be a continuing effort to safeguard the health and welfare of breeding birds, and to become better informed about the issues that will impact the business of Aviculture.”
